The President of Estonia had a meeting with the Federal President of Germany

Meeting of the Estonian President Lennart Meri and the Federal President of Germany Roman HerzogPresident Lennart Meri had a meeting with the Federal President of Germany Roman Herzog at Kadriorg this evening.
During the meeting, the Presidents discussed the relations between Estonia and Germany. Talking about visa-free travelling, the Head of State of Estonia commended the high level of the Estonian border-guard service and mentioned that the representatives of the EU Member States were coming as well to see how the border is guarded. According to President Roman Herzog, in case the Eastern border holds, the visa-free travelling between Estonia and Germany will not be a problem.
Roman Herzog called special attention to the speech of the President of the U.S.A. Bill Clinton in Berlin yesterday, in which he had spoken relatively little about foreign policy, but had talked about the integration of Europe and the Baltic countries and mentioned also Estonia. The Heads of States talked also about other events of international life.
Roman Herzog emphasised the tremendous changes that have taken place in Estonia, comparing the situations seen 1991 and 1998. The Federal President of Germany expressed great satisfaction with what he had seen in the streets of Tallinn today, the street scene and everyday life of people has taken a long step further, he stated. He added approvingly that changes were possible also without a rich country supporting, such as West Germany was for East Germany.
President Lennart Meri and Mrs. Helle Meri gave a dinner in the honour of the guest and the Speaker of Riigikogu Toomas Savi and Prime Minister Mart Siiman were also invited to the dinner.
