The President of the Republic gave a speech on the Symposion of the 750th anniversary of the Lübeck Charter

President Lennart Meri and the German Bundespräsident Roman Herzog whom Lennart Meri had invited to visit Tallinn, gave a speech today on the symposion ''750 years of the Lübeck town bylaws - from town bylaws to the European law: self-managing local governments in Europe''.
The speech given by President Meri can be found on the President's Office Homepage on the Internet address www.president.ee.
On the press conference given after the conclusion of the symposion President Lennart Meri expressed his pleasure that Roman Herzog, who was here at the time when the foundations of the Estonian Constitution were established, has come to Tallinn again.
Estonian Head of State said that the Lübeck Charter space was an early model of the European Union, which is currently being restructured on a modern level. The President pointed out that we should look into the past in order to discover the opportunities of the future.
Today, President Herzog visited the German School in Tallinn and hosted a lunch in the honour of President Lennart Meri and Mrs. Helle Meri before his departure.
