The President of the Republic had a meeting with members of Riigikogu

President Lennart Meri received the representatives of Riigikogu fractions in Kadriorg today and introduced to them his proposals on the appointment of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Bank of Estonia and the Comptroller General.

President Meri has received the consent of Vello Vensel, Professor of the Tallinn Technical University, to take the position of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Bank of Estonia and the consent of Juhan Parts, Vice-Counsellor of the Ministry of Justice, to take the position of the Comptroller General. In both a cases a simple majority of the votes of Riigikogu members is required.

The President emphasised that both candidates have no connection to any political party, which guarantees the impartiality and independence of both constitutional institutions.

Professor Vello Vensel (56) is the Professor of Statistics in the Institute of Theoretical Economic Science and Methodology in the Tallinn Technical University. He graduated from the University of Tartu in the speciality of finance and credit.

Juhan Parts (31) graduated from the Department of Law of the University of Tartu and prior to taking his present position in 1991 worked in the Department of Economic Law in the Ministry of Finance.

The President expects to hear the opinions of Riigikogu fractions of the candidates and thereafter he will present them to Riigikogu for official appointment.
