President Lennart Meri sent a message of congratulations today to Glafcos Clerides, President of the Republic of Cyprus, on the occasion of his re-election.

The Estonian President commended the statesmanship of President Clerides who, notwithstanding the complicated circumstances, has led his country into enlargement negotiations with the European Union. ''I am confident that you will steer the same course during your next term of office and the negotiations will be concluded successfully,'' the Estonian head of state wrote in his message.

President Meri said he was pleased that close cooperation between Estonia and Cyprus as two future members of the European Union had had a head start during the recent months, and he was looking forward to ever closer relations.

President Meri wished President Glafcos Clerides success in leading his people and his state.
