The President of the Republic’s Academic Council convened to the last meeting

The President of the Republic’s Academic Council,gathered for its last meeting today. The theme of the meeting was “Political Parties, Politics, Democracy”. On the meeting, Professor Kaido Jaanson discussed some phenomena in the party policy landscape of democratic countries at the end of the 20th century. The presentation of Mikko Lagerspetz, Professor of Sociology from the Estonian Humanitarian Institute, focused on the development needs of politics and political culture in Estonia, and Evald Mikkel, lecturer form the politology department of Tartu University, spoke of the prospects of party democracy in the post-communist world.

As this was the Academic Council’s last meeting during President Lennart Meri’s term of office, the President of the Republic decided to suspend the activities of the Academic Council until the new President of the Republic would adopt a decision on the further activities and membership of the Academic Council.

The Academic Council also adopted a statement addressed to the Estonian public today.

At 6 PM, a book about the activities the President of the Republic’s Academic Council was presented at the Kadriorg Art Museum. Members of the Academic Council, academicians Mihkel Veiderma, Hillar Aben, Jaan Einasto, Erast Parmasto, and the scholar of literature Märt Väljataga gave addresses at the presentation.
