The President of the Republic’s Cultural Foundation will issue the second Young Scientist Award

The President of the Republic’s Cultural Foundation hereby announced the competition to the Young Scientist Award of 2001, in the value of 40,00 Estonian kroons. The President’s Cultural Foundation and the entrepreneur Toomas Luman agreed in October 2000 that Toomas Luman would be financing the Young Scientist Award for at least 10 years to come.

The Young Scientist Award will be issued to young scientists of Estonian origin doing research work in either Estonian or foreign universities or research institutions. The candidate must be younger than 35 (incl.) and have a doctor’s degree.

The candidates may be nominated by young scientists themselves or their supervisors or employers, or by members of the board of the Cultural Foundation. To apply for the scholarship, a written application including personal data and a short CV must be submitted, as well as description of the scientific research, the list of relevant publications by the applicant, and at least two recommendations from the supervisor of the research or a professor.

The receiver of the award will try to come to an agreement with higher education institutions to give at least two free academic lectures on his research subject within one year. If possible, lectures at the colleges of Estonian universities at Narva, Pärnu, and Haapsalu or elsewhere outside Tallinn and Tartu will be given preference

The documents necessary for applying for the scholarship must be sent to the President of the Republic’s Cultural Foundation at the address: Weizenbergi 39, Tallinn, by September 25, 2001. The receiver of the award will be chosen by the Board of the Cultural Foundation who may also consult with scientific researchers and lecturers.

The first Young Scientist Award issued last year went to the molecular biologist Priit Kogerman.
