Joint Statement of the President of the Republic of Estonia Lennart Meri, the Chairman of the Riigikogu and the Prime Minister
12.09.1997

Dear Compatriots,

The training course of the Estonian unit of the Baltic Peacekeeping Battalion in the straits between Pakri Island and Kurkse Port on September 11, 1997, ended in the loss of human lives. Fourteen voluntary peacekeepers of the Republic of Estonia died and are still missing.

The people of Estonia bow their heads in mourning for their best sons. The peacekeepers stayed true to their goal, in defiance of the worsening weather conditions. It does not lessen the pain of their mothers, fathers and families, nor does it bring back our sons to us. It does, however, speak volumes about the men's strong will and readiness to cope with tasks that are not humanly possible. Let us respect that, but let us understand that the memory of the departed will be best kept in our hearts if we teach our sons and daughters in even more demanding a manner to serve our country in such a way that they will live in the name of the fatherland.

We want the families of the departed to know that all the people of Estonia stand next to you today, and share your grief.

Lennart Meri, President of the Republic
Toomas Savi, Speaker of Riigikogu
Mart Siimann, Prime Minister
