President of the Republic on Conferring the I Class Order of the Cross of the Eagle to General Wesley K. Clark, Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO at the Viimsi Residence on April 14, 2000

General Clark,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my pleasure to confer on you, Sir Wesley, Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, the highest class Order of the Cross of the Eagle of the Republic of Estonia.

With this decoration, the Republic of Estonia expresses her gratitude to you, General Clark, for developing the relations between Estonia and NATO.

As the Supreme Commander of National Defence in Estonia, I express to you, General Clark, the high recognition of our State and our defence forces for your personal contribution to the strengthening of our co-operation and for preparing Estonian defence forces for NATO membership.

Today we call our relations a strategic partnership. We are partners in producing the stability and security in Europe. We are grateful to you, General Clark, for the advice and assistance that the Estonian defence forces have received from you in improving their structure and defence capacity, and in enhancing their ability for international co-operation.

Estonia thanks you, General Clark, for the fact that Estonian units have served under your command in Bosnia and are serving in Kosovo today, and for having excellently organised and commanded peacekeeping operations. Under your supervision, the Estonian defence forces have improved their ability of international co-operation.

In recognition of your services, dear Sir Wesley, the Republic of Estonia confers on you our highest military decoration, the I Class Order of the Cross of the Eagle.
