President of the Republic to the Laureates of the Folklore Award delivered by Jaan Õunapuu, the Tartu County Governor February 23, 2000
23.02.2000

Dear Laureates,
Dear friends!

The state and the people live their everyday lives in different ways, and when added up, all our activities together are the Republic of Estonia. Of course, this is an elementary truth, but your work in this museum enables us all to keep our eyes on this progress. And to find new strength in it.

Dear Enda Kallas, Ain Raal and Kadi Salu! Your work, recording of the Estonian folklore is indeed a pillar of strength to the self-awareness of our people. By honouring and appreciating folklore in the broadest sense, we deepen our understanding that life, which only moves in one direction, must in its values grasp the wisdom, the experience, the inventiveness of language, and the twisting tunes of the past. In all the tumults of progress, we must still feel and recognise this ingrained core. This is the pledge of continuity. And your work, for which you merit acclaim.

Congratulations on the folklore awards and the 82nd anniversary of the Republic of Estonia!
