On the evening of February 8, the President of the Republic's Academic Council convened on a scheduled meeting, and this time, the subject of discussion was: ''The world around and within us: macrocosm and microcosm''.
Academician Jaan Einasto spoke of the universe surrounding us, of its genesis and also concepts of the universe at different times. Academician Richard Villems spoke of evolution, of the transmission of genes in maternal and paternal line, and of genetic identity.
The academic council also decided to compile a comprehensive review of the council's work, during the period from November 1994 to 2001. Within this time, 27 meetings have been held, and the Council plans to hold two more meetings this year. Through the Academic Council's working years, very different subjects have been discussed on these meetings – from education and health care to questions of innovatics and transit. According to the plan, the work should be completed by the end of this year.
The Academic Council of the President of the Republic will next convene on May 10, 2001, to discuss wildlife protection and environment.
