The President's Academic Council discussed matters related to ports and transit

In the evening of November 23, President of the Republic's Academic Council convened on a regular meeting in Kadriorg; this time, the themes discussed were the role of ports and transit in the Estonian economy

For introduction, the Council listened to the observations concerning the economic growth in Estonia made by Raimund Hagelberg, member of the Academic Council. Erik Terk from the Estonian Institute of the Futures Studies spoke of transit's role in the Estonian economy and the effect of the so-called Russian factor. Enno Lend from the Tallinn College of Engineering spoke of the logistical structure of the Tallinn region, and Riho Rasmann, Chairman of the Board of the Ports of Tallinn Ltd, spoke to the Council of the competition advantages of Estonia and the port of Tallinn in the logistic chain; and Uno Liiv from the Tallinn Technical University spoke generally of the port construction situation in Estonia, he touched more specifically upon the hydrogeology of the construction of the Muuga Port and the port of Ruhnu, and on the project of the deep sea port of Saaremaa. The last paper was delivered by Rein Haavel from the Cybernetica Ltd, who spoke of the safety on Estonian waterways.

The presentations were followed by a vivid discussion where President of the Republic, the Minister of Transport and Communications Toivo Jürgenson, and others present at the meeting participated.

The next meeting of President of the Republic's Academic Council will take place on February 8, 2001, when macro- and microcosm will be discussed; the session taking place in February bears the heading ''The world around us and inside us''.
